Prince of Persia: The Graphic Novel is a graphic novel that was released September 2, 2008. Created by Jordan Mechner, the creator of the Prince of Persia video games, this graphic novel is beautifully written by award-winning poet A.B. Sina and strikingly illustrated by Pham Le Uyen and Alex Puvilland[1]. The graphic novel is published by First Second Books. It tells a whole new Prince of Persia story.
Story[]
Destiny brings together two princes from different centuries of historic Persia in this fantastical epic graphic novel. As their city begins to fall, and everything they believe in crumbles and decays, they find that only they can stand against the twilight of their eras[1].
During the 9th century, prince Layth, who was raised as Guiv's brother but is actually one of two survivors of the previous ruling family is about to drown Guiv. Guiv's father killed all of the others when he took power some years before. Guilan, the wife of Layth and sister of Guiv begs Layth to spare Guiv's life, Guiv heads out into the desert mountains, where he meets a giant peacock, Turul. Turul leads him to a ruined citadel on top of a mountain.
In Marv in the 13th century, Shirin is the young and willful daughter of one of the overlords of the city, being taught to dance by the dashing Arsalan. But she hates her parents and the decadence of the court, so she cuts her hair, disguises herself as a boy, and runs away. She’s saved from a well by a man who claims to be Layth, though he looks much more like Guiv. The pair end up at the same citadel, which is ruined four hundred years later. Her mysterious savior eventually turns out to be a different lost prince, named Ferdos.
The two stories continue in parallel, as Layth is shown to be a bad leader, easily led by greedy counselors. Meanwhile the Marvan government in the 13th century is turning out to be equally corrupt. Now it's up to Prince Guiv, Shirin, and Ferdos to set both centuries right.
