Marv is the main setting in Prince of Persia: The Graphic Novel.
History[]
During 9th century A.D. Saman attacked Marv and killed the previous ruler. The Caliph's commander Mamun had a baby son, Layth, whom Saman adopted and raised as his own. Saman had two children of his own, twins: Guiv and Guilan. After Saman's death, Guiv was to be the next ruler. But a Caliph from Baghdad made an ultimatum, let Layth rule or they will attack the city. Guiv reluctantly agreed. Layth married Guilan. Guiv wanted to kill Layth, but standing over him with sword in hand, he decided not to at the last minute. Guiv was caught and almost killed by Layth, but Guilan's promise to kill herself and her unborn baby, made him spare Guiv's life. Guiv having changed by the near death experience wanted to seek out the prophet and befriended a mystical bird on the way. Having found no one in the prophet's old citadel, Guiv went to live in the old prophet's ruins. People noticed someone there and thought Guiv to be the prophet. With a magic flame and Turul's feathers, the people were shown a prophecy: a baby is born on a certain date who will kill all the rulers, and a Prince will rise from waters.[1]
Amir, the servant of Caliph in Baghdad, and later general to Layth, wanted to rule himself, and killed Layth. Guilan hid her daughter who was just born in a well, but Guilan herself was captured. Not wanting to marry Amir, Guilan took her own life. Guilan's daughter ended up with Guiv. Guiv decided to take back his throne, and attacked the palace with a pride of lions. Amir set the palace on fire before being burned alive by the flames.[1]
In 13th century A.D., a girl Shirin escapes the city and disguises herself as a boy, named Shapur. She meets Ferdos, who is the only survivor of a purge of baby boys prophecysed to kill all rulers. Events lead to Ferdos taking the actions he was meant to and lead an attack on Marv. But just then the Mongol horde reached the city gates, and they are forced to abandon the attack and flee. The rulers surrender to the Khan's army with a promise of peace. The Mongols however go back on their word and when the gates are opened, they kill the rulers and sack the city. Ferdos and Shirin return to the old palace ruins of Marv and sit on the crumbling thrones.[1]
