Basra is a location for several levels in Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame.
History[]
Basra is a city somewhere in Persia. Basra was ruled by a King and Queen, who had a young son. The king also owned the magical horse, enchanted to be only ridden by the Basra bloodline[1]. The kingdom came under attack by a young nobleman who had allied himself with the forces of darkness. The inhabitants were all massacred: men, women, and children alike. Only the Prince survived, as he was put into a wooden cradle, and washed to a river from a moat during the attack[2]. The city was then put under a curse by the Witch, who drew the symbols of the Serpent God on the walls. The witch also revived the heads of the slain people as ghouls to haunt the ruins and gnaw on the weeds[3].
15 years later[3] the Prince returned to the ruins and picked up his father's sword from the throne room. The ghost of the Queen asked to be avenged[4].
Gameplay[]
The ruins of Basra are separated into four levels. Upon entering the ruins the player finds a broken sword, that only does half a damage. On the third ruins level, the player finds the throne room and the King's sword. On the last ruins level, the player must mount the Horse to progress.[4]
Trivia[]
- Basra's name was not revealed ingame. The name is however used several times in the design documents by Jordan Mechner[5].
