How do you reach the fortress in the second level, i.e. after the Prince is shipwrecked? The map is useless.

Am I the only one who feels like there should be more significance to this place with the magic water? It is alluded to in both Forgotten Sands and T2T. The prince forgets about it, or his memory of it is at least obscured, every time he visits, despite his having a sand of time artifact. Do we have any evidence as to what this place IS?
